This is the theme for many of our participants here at Jan Werner Adult Day Care every Friday,
“Move to the beat of your own Drum”, as Beach Ball Drumming was introduced as the highlighted activity of the week. Our Recreational Therapist, Phyllis Jobe researches ways to enlighten the lives of our elderly with daily activities such as these and this one took to the interest of many.
The Setup is simple and this is an activity you can do at home with your loved one. You will need:
- Large Beach Balls
- Buckets
- Pool Noodles or drum sticks
- Your choice of fun music
Beach Ball Drumming has many benefits to our elderly that participate. As they select their song of choice for each round they are also improving several skill sets through-out a 30 minute session with Phyllis. Upper extremity strength, endurance, and posture are increased as they must sit up right to beat to a rhythm on their beach balls. Increased cognitive function, during each session Phyllis will give commands such as, left, right, right, and big bang, at this time you will hear the sounds of thunder coming from our multi-purpose room. Most importantly, with 25 smiling faces the goal is to have fun, and encourage socialization with group therapy.
